Task 3 - Technical File

Pixel and Resolution

Pixel is short for picture element, a pixel is a single point in a graphc image. Graphics monitors display pictures by dividing the display screen into thousands (or millions) of pixels, aranged in rows and columns. the pixels are so close to gether that they appear connected. In digital imaging, a pixel, is a physical point in a raster image, or the smallest addressable element in a display device; so it is the smallest controllable element of a picture represented on the screen. The address of a pixel corresponds to its physical coordinates.

Example of pixels. Shows a zoomed section of an image to demonstrate how it is made up of pixels.

Resoluion is oftern  used for a pixel count in digital imaing, hight resolution mens more image detail.
Below is an illustration of how the same image might appear at different pixel resolutions, if the pixels were poorly rendered as sharp squares (normally, a smooth image reconstruction from pixels would be preferred, but for illustration of pixels, the sharp squares make the point better).

Vector and Raters Images

Raster images are based on pixels and this scale with loss of clarity, while vector-based images can be scaled without degrading quality because, vector graphics is based on images made up of paths, or strokes through control points, its these points that define  the parameters such as, colour, shape, thickness and a fill.

 File Formats and Uses

Bmp - Bitmap image file, used to store bitmap digital images.
Png - Portable network garphics, used as a bitmapped image format that uses lossless data compression, supports transparency.
Gif - Graphics interchange forma, bitmap image format, supports animations.
Tiff - Tagged image file format, file format for storing images.
Jpg/JPEG - Image file format, used for uts compression of images, also supports layered images.
Psd - Photoshop document, stores an image with support for most editing options in Photoshop.
Pdf - Portable document format, file format used to show document in software, hardware, and operating systems.
Eps - Encapsulated postcript, standard format for importing and exporting postscript language files.
Ai - Adobe illustrator artwork, proprietary file format, representing sing-pase vector based drawing.

Compression

Compression is where a file is reduced in bit size to help reduce resources usage, such as hard drive space. There is lossless compression (eliminates no needed data) and lossy compression (identifies marginally important information and removes it).

Image Capture Devices

Devices that capture images, such as, Ccamera's software that takes screenshorts of your computer screen, or simply a computer automatic print screen command on the keyboards.

Opimising
the process of modifying a software system to make some aspect of it work more efficiently or use fewer resources. In general, a computer program may be optimised so that it executes more rapidly, or is capable of operating with less memory storage or other resources.

Storage and Asset Management

Asset management refers to being in control of your digital files - renaming, backing up, grouping, archiving, maintaining, and exporting them to other formats.

Task 2 - Computer Game Graphics

Pixel Art

Pixel art is a form of digital art, created through the use of raster graphics software, where images are edited on the pixel level. Graphics in most old games , graphiing calculator games, and many mobile games are mostly pixel art. Pixel are was very often used in older computer and consol video games. With the increasing used of 3D graphic in games, pixal ar lost some of its use. Despite that, this is still a very active professional.amateur area, since mobile phones and other portable deviced still have low resolution and therefore require more skillful use of space and memory.

Concept Art

Concept art is a form of illustration where the main goal is to convey a visual representation of design, idea, and/or mood for use in films, video games, animation, or comin books before it is put into the final product.

Texture Art
Texture mapping is a method of adding detail, surface texture (a bitmap or raster image), or colour to a computer-generated graphic or 3D model.

Background Graphics

Background garphics were used to submerse the player into thinking that the game they are playing had a real life world to it. Most backgrounds are just a long bitmap image which have been repeated several times.

Print Media Art

This is artwork made to advertise the game that is being sold, many works of this art style is done in art software. To which is then printed out to be used as posters or covers or packaging.

Unit 78 Task 1 - Artistic Styles in Computer Games

Photorealism

Photorealism is the art style of trying to convery, characters and scens, to look as real as possible. By taking pictures of real objects and texturing them how the real object looks. here is an argument going on between developers on, whether photorealism is needed to advance the video game industry or isn't. It is mainly used in first person shooters to show detail. Photorealism usually takes more time to create as every object is made up with polygons and pixels, yet photorealism takes up more disk space, that's why some games come as two or even three disks.

Cel Shading

Cel shading is a type of rendering which makes 3D models look hand drawn. It is mainly used to mimic comics or cartoons. Some games that use cel shading include; Borderlands, Catheringe, amd many anime based games. IT is somewhat recent, appearing from around the beginning of the twenty-first century. In addition to computer graphics, it most commonly turns up in video games. However, the result of cel-shading has a very simplistic feel like that of hand-drawn animation. the name comes from cels (short for celluloid), the clear sheets of acetate which are painted on for use in traditional 2D animation, such as disney classics.

Abstraction

Abstracion is the art style of, less is more, this is where the art style of the game doesn't mean or consent to anything, it is just there. An example of this is Tetris and arguably Pacman. Artwork that reshapes the natural world for expressive purposes is called abstract; that which derives from, but does no imitate a recognisable subject is called non-objective abstraction.

Exaggeration - Anime & Manga

Exaggeration art style is used in many anime or manga games. Its designed to b over the top. Its done to give the game a more far fetched fun facter. the images are expressed more highly than normal games. Example game sof this are, The Naruto Game series and the Dragon Ball Game series.
